Breeding
Breeding our dogs comes with lots of challenges. We all aspire to breed the best quality dogs that we can, both in terms of health and temperament, and need to understand all the complexities involved to truly achieve that aim.
Breeding for better dogs is not an exact science, but we need to use scientific knowledge to help us, from the use of an increasing number of genetic tests available, to developing and using Estimated Breeding Values to determine the best dogs to pair together and to enhance the selection of new breeding dogs. Accurate data is essential to enable forward progress.
We also need to understand reproduction and maximise our chances of conception as part of our selections.
However there will always be a degree of ‘risk management’ involved and managing the relative risk is key to success, within your own key priorities and aims. Canine Strategies can help with all aspects of breeding, including managing genetic diversity, programme management, reproduction, whelping and litters in nest and new breeding dog selection.
